Field note 05 · Reading the collection

A dyeable scarf is the beginning of a project

Choose the blank for the finished use before choosing a color.

Buy for the intended piece, not only the intended color.

Start at the other end

Before choosing a dyeable textile, decide what the finished piece needs to do. A light shoulder wrap, a neck scarf and a textile for display have different practical requirements. Write down your intended use and the dimensions you want; then look for a blank that matches them. Color cannot repair a piece that is too narrow for its purpose.

Do not treat every blank alike

Use the supplier’s stated fiber content and preparation guidance. Avoid assuming that an item described as ready for dyeing will behave like a different fabric from a previous project. Follow the instructions for the actual materials you use; this guide is a shopping checklist, not a dye recipe or a substitute for handling instructions.

Check the pack as well as the piece

The Organic Cotton Mull Shawl is one starting point in RARA. On the original Maiwa listing, check whether you have selected a single piece or a multipack, and whether the dimensions refer to one item. RARA excludes multipacks from this source import to reduce confusion, but the source may still offer multiple selections. For a first experiment, decide how much unfinished material you can reasonably use before being drawn into a lower per-piece bundle price. Keep the source link with your project notes so you can return to the correct blank.
