# The $10 spice jar and the $40 bag

A price ceiling is useful. A shared unit is what makes a comparison fair.

RARA · October 13, 2026 · 2 min read

Compare the same spice, same currency, same unit.

## The number is only half the label

A small jar and a refill bag can appear beside each other in a search result. Sorting them by sticker price sorts the amount paid, not the value of the contents. Before comparing, record the net weight of the selected variant. Do not infer it from the apparent size of a product photograph.

## Work through the arithmetic

Consider a hypothetical $10 jar containing 40 grams and a $40 bag containing 250 grams. The jar costs $0.25 per gram; the bag costs $0.16. That does not automatically make the bag the right purchase. If you only need a little for one recipe, the lower initial outlay may matter more. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not prices for Royal Cinnamon or any current merchant offer.

## Use the original listing

The Royal Cinnamon source is a useful place to practice reading a variant selector. Match the size, price and currency before doing the calculation, and add shipping only when comparing final purchase costs. RARA’s budget filter deliberately excludes unknown amounts. That keeps an unpriced bag from masquerading as a free item, but it also means a budgeted search is not the whole collection. Remove the ceiling to see those unanswered possibilities.
